Some growth requirements of Bacteroides fragilis.
The bacteroides occur on all mucous surfaces (Rosebury and Sonnenwirth, 1958). They were shown by Eggerth and Gagnon (1933) and by Ruebner (1957) to be the predominant organisms in the lower intestinal tract. They were also shown by Macdonald et al. (1956) to be pathogenic components of an experimental fusospirochetal infection. They are isolated infrequently from many types of infections such ...
متن کاملNutritional features of Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis.
Studies of three reference strains of Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis showed that they grow well in a minimal defined medium containing glucose, hemin, vitamin B(12), minerals, bicarbonate-carbon dioxide buffer, NH(4)Cl, and sulfide. The vitamin B(12) requirement of 0.1 ng/ml was replaced with 7.5 mug of methionine. Cysteine or sulfide was an excellent source of sulfur, thioglycolate was a...
متن کاملInhibitory effect of fumarate on growth of Bacteroides fragilis.
The growth of the strictly anaerobic bacterium Bacteroides fragilis on glucose was inhibited in the presence of fumarate. The molar growth yields for glucose were 29.6 and 20.0g of dry cells/mol of glucose in the absence and presence of fumarate, respectively. In the culture with fumarate, the ratio of lactate production increased and that of succinate was slightly decreased.Fumarate addition also ...
متن کاملBacteroides fragilis meningitis.
A fatal case of pyogenic meningitis due to Bacteroides fragilis in a 6-year-old boy is reported. The need for processing cerebrospinal fluid of patients with underlying conditions such as chronic otitis media for recovery of both aerobes and anaerobes is discussed.
متن کاملCephalosporinase activity in Bacteroides fragilis.
Cephalosporinase activity was demonstrated in all of 10 strains of Bacteroides fragilis investigated. Low rates of hydrolysis of cephalosporins (0.25 to 3.5 mumol of cephaloridine per h per 10(9) cells) were found, but no activity against penicillin substrates was detected. In two strains the cephalosporinase activity was increased 40-and 80-fold by growing cells in the presence of penicillin. ...
